About the Eurolingua Institute

The Eurolingua Institute was founded in 1993 by J Barry Haywood. It is now the largest international organisation of its kind, providing unique opportunities for people aged 16 to 75 years. Its students come from all walks of life to learn 13 different foreign languages in the countries where they are spoken.

The Eurolingua Institute is based in the UK. It offers a wide range of language programmes specially designed for individual students, family groups, school groups and businesses throughout Europe, North America, Latin America, Caribbean, South Africa, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, in over 40 countries.

How Eurolingua Came To Be

It all began with an unprobable French student who, after working more than 20 years as an International Management Consultant and after traveling abroad a lot, decided to thank the man who had made it all possible: his French teacher. Barry describes this encounter in his paper published in the Journal for the Chartered Institute of Linguists. Barry has been a member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists since 1977:

The Eurolingua Institute's founder, Barry Haywood

"I wanted to spend more time in France and bring to others some of the pleasure I had felt in coming, albeit late, to the French language and culture. My old teacher wondered if I had ever thought of putting my organisational skills to good use in arranging language programmes for people wanting and sometimes needing to learn French quickly, for social, educational or commercial needs. I decided to investigate the possibilities of arranging homestay study visits, combined with excursions, for individuals and groups of all ages and levels. I found a number of experienced tutors in Britain and France who would welcome students into their home and provide one-to-one language tuition. The Eurolingua Institute was launched!!

The Institute now has over 250 one-to-one homestay locations. We provide language programmes, for all levels and age groups, where the languages are spoken throughout Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Russia and Spain. There are also Easter and Summer group programmes and I am particularly proud of our Eurolingua Espace Langues facilities, overlooking the famous Place de la Comédie in Montpellier, which provide year-round courses.

Students attending Eurolingua language programmes come from Europe, Scandinavia, and even the USA, Canada and Turkey. One person who has found fulfilment on our courses is well into his 70's and keeps coming back for more"
